Recent Crime Capitals In America

Following a pattern of violence that began in 2020, more than a dozen cities recorded record murder figures in 2021.

With growth and changes in the United States, certain cities and regions may see an increase in crime rates. This can be due to various factors, including economic conditions, population changes, and local laws and policies.

Here are some cities that have recently seen a rise in crime and have been identified as emerging crime capitals in the United States:

1. New Orleans

Since around June 30, New Orleans has reported 145 homicides, setting it on track for over 300 murders this year. This places the city’s homicide rate at 74.12 per 100,000 inhabitants annually.

However, that number exceeds Chicago’s 18.26 murders per 100,000 inhabitants, although the city had more homicides in 2021 than in the previous quarter-century.

According to AH analytics, New Orleans has shown the highest homicide rate per capita among major U.S. cities in recent years. It would be placed ninth in homicides among major cities that are not at war.

Murders in New Orleans increased from 119 in 2019 to 201 in 2020. That figure steadily increased in 2021, totaling 218, an 83% increase beyond 2019. The president of the Louisiana FOP even acknowledged these statistics in a statement and agreed that much work needs to be done.

He said, “I cannot really speak for the rest of the country, but folks in Louisiana certainly know it is one of the…most dangerous cities.” He also recognized that what people see on the news and experience personally when they visit the city shines a great light on the problem.

2. Baltimore, Maryland

Baltimore has long struggled with high crime rates, and in recent years the city has seen an increase in violence. In 2020, Baltimore recorded the highest number of homicides, with over 350 killings. This increase in violence has been attributed to factors like the opioid epidemic, gang activity, a lack of resources, poor police presence, and many more.

3. St. Louis, Missouri

St. Louis has also seen a rise in violent crime in recent years, with the city ranking as one of the most dangerous in the country. In 2020, its records documented over 200 homicides, a rate significantly higher than the national average.

The city has struggled with poverty, racial tension, and a lack of investment in certain neighborhoods. However, homicide trends have decreased so far in 2022 by 15% since 2021.

4. Oakland, California

Oakland has a history of high crime rates, which seems to be an ever-evolving one as the city has seen an increase in homicides and shootings. In 2020, the city saw a record number of homicides, with over 100 killings. The city has also struggled with prevalent issues such as gang activity, drug trafficking, and limited resources for at-risk youth.

5. Chicago, Illinois

Chicago, like Oakland, was never famous for keeping the peace. It has long been known for its high crime rates, and in the past few years, the city has stepped up its unenviable reputation for violence.

The city had up to 700 homicides in 2020, a rate significantly higher than the national average. Chicago has also had to contend with gang activity, poverty, limited resources, and drug use.
